Opportunity type:  Part-time, 4 days per week, 3 months probation period
Working hours:  32 hours per week. Regular evening and occasional weekend hours as necessary
Salary: £50,000 pro rata 
Annual Leave: 20 days pro rata (plus 8 statutory holidays)

Status: 18 month fixed term contract

The Interim Director will be responsible for the successful implementation of the institution’s exhibition programme as well as fostering fundraising relationships with individual and corporate donors. You will act as an effective ambassador for Mimosa House both locally, nationally and internationally and will be an excellent communicator to stakeholders, media and the wider public to spread the word about Mimosa House and its work.

In the new Interim Director, we are looking for a leader with a national track record for delivering an engaging exhibition programme, attracting new patrons, raising funds from interested corporations and foundations and inspiring and motivating staff in the delivery of their vision. With experience of managing a small team, significant curatorial experience and demonstrable fundraising experience, the new Interim Director will have strong networks nationally and internationally. They will be both a good collaborator, working side by side with the Deputy Director and Gallery Manager, and someone able to build effective partnerships to further the work of Mimosa House as it embarks on the next chapter of its development.

Key Responsibilities:

Fundraising:

  • Lead fundraising efforts, corporate giving and donor cultivation

  • Develop and maintain relationships with individual donors, foundations, and corporate sponsors to secure financial support.

  • Oversee reporting and evaluation to funders, in particular against the Arts Council England National Portfolio funding agreement

  • Ensure financial stability and sustainability through effective budgeting and financial management.

  • Curate and manage the events programme for the patrons circle, including museum and gallery visits, artist studio visits, dinners, and other special events.

  • Contribute to the grant writing


Curatorial:

  • Lead the planning and execution of exhibitions and programs that align with the organisation's mission and artistic vision. 

  • Foster relationships with local, national, and international artists, curators, and cultural institutions. Engage with the community to ensure programs are inclusive and reflective of diverse perspectives.

  • Develop and implement public programmes that enhance audience engagement and learning.

  • Conduct and supervise research related to current and future exhibitions.

  • Oversee the design, layout, and installation of exhibitions. Work with Gallery Manager and technical staff to manage logistics and ensure the proper handling and display of artworks.

  • Continuously evaluate and improve the visitor experience within exhibitions and curatorial programs. Analyse visitor feedback to inform future planning.

  • Contribute to the strategic planning of the organisation, ensuring curatorial activities align with broader organisational goals and initiatives.

  • Ensure all curatorial practices comply with legal, ethical, and best practice standards in the art and museum fields.

Governance:

  • Work closely with the Board of Trustees to develop and implement strategic plans.

  • Support the Deputy Director to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Support the Deputy Director in the accurate reporting to appropriate authorities and public bodies (e.g. Charities Commision, Arts Council England and other funders) on a timely basis. 

Communication:

  • Represent the organisation in public forums and act as the primary spokesperson.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including artists, community members, and partners.

  • Oversee the creation of marketing and communication materials and social media strategy to promote the organisation’s programmes and initiatives.

Operations:

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the organisation.

  • Oversee daily operations and ensure effective implementation of programmes and initiatives.

  • Manage staff and volunteers, providing guidance and support to ensure high performance.

Finance:

  • Oversee the organisation's financial resources to ensure long-term sustainability.

  • Support the Deputy Director in the financial management of the organisation, including budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting.

Person Specification 

  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in a visual arts organisation with line management experience.

  • Significant experience in curating and delivering exhibitions and public program events.

  • Significant fundraising experience, with a proven track record of successful grant writing, donor recruitment, and corporate giving.

  • Strong organisational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • Substantial knowledge of visual arts and a strong network, both national and international.

  • Passion for the visual arts and a commitment to the mission of the organisation.
