Out From the Centre shines a light on 40 years of local history, untold stories and the life-changing power of collectivity. METRO Charity has advocated for diverse and inclusive mental and sexual health services, as well as youth and community support since the ‘80s, from being on the frontlines of Section 28 protests to launching the first community-based HIV/STI testing clinic in London. This exhibition honours and reimagines METRO’s past and looks towards a future shaped by solidarity, creativity, and collective action. Out From the Centre offers a fresh, interactive, and multisensory experience that is suitable for all ages, and is free to attend.

Spanning two floors, Out From the Centre features powerful original materials from Bishopsgate Institute’s archives—including protest placards, t-shirts, photographs, newspaper clippings, video footage, and a panel from the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt. The ground floor honours METRO’s roots and evolution, from grassroots beginnings to a leading equality and diversity charity, while spotlighting the growing impact of rising inequalities. The upstairs space turns to the future, showcasing original artwork and interactive installations co-created through a series of community workshops, inviting visitors to get involved, and add their own contribution to the exhibition.
