Environmental Sustainability Statement
At Mimosa House we recognise our responsibility to help protect the planet and are committed to minimising the impact of our activity on the environment, and contribute to the sector improving global environmental sustainability.
Mimosa House acknowledges a climate emergency as a signee of Culture Declares Emergency, recognising this as one of the most urgent issues of our time. As Declarers, we take action to harness the power of arts and culture to address deep-rooted injustices, to care for and create adaptive, resilient and joyful communities, and to influence the urgent and necessary transformation of harmful global systems.
We are a public institution committed to supporting artists and our communities' visions of the future, therefore in turn we pledge ourselves to new ways of working that embodies this within our decision making - extending to our commitment to environmental sustainability.
We know that there is more to do. We are actively reducing our environmental impact. Mimosa House is part of the Gallery Climate Coalition and through their Carbon Calculator tools, we are regularly reporting on the carbon footprint of our programme as well as our core running.
Our recent activities include:
Curatorial Strategy to include one show per year with a focus on a UK, emerging artist (minimising travel and shipping).
Fabrication materials recycled from shows to shows, reproduction of paper based artworks rather than shipping and repurposing frames and mounts.
Donating exhibition materials to local artists to be reused.
Environmental Responsibility as a topic to the agenda of the Board of Trustees meeting on a bi-quarterly basis.
Switching our energy tariff to a renewable energy zero carbon guarantee.
Priorities for the coming year include:
We will clearly communicate our environmental commitment with suppliers and contractors, visitors and clients to encourage them to support systems and work with us to reduce our impact.
We aim to reuse, recycle or repurpose more of our event and exhibition materials.
We aim to share successes and initiatives with peer networks of other galleries and arts organisations.
Ensuring our governance framework is used to help embed environmental responsibility and sustainability throughout our operations.
Continuing to monitor and minimise the energy use of our buildings.
Continuing to hold ourselves to account by monitoring and sharing data on our consumption of resources.
As a small charity we acknowledge our responsibility for future generations. We aim to act in line with the principles of climate justice, recognising the connections between the climate crisis and other global injustices. Climate change disproportionately impacts vulnerable communities, and these communities are often already marginalised by other systems of oppression. Addressing both climate justice and social justice through our programming and operations is essential to creating a more sustainable and equitable future. We want our environmental actions to support the needs of people on the frontlines of marginalisation and injustice.
