"Parasites of Pangu" is an operatic performance combining poetry, trash-instruments and mythical laments for an apocalyptic post-anthropocene landscape. Artist, musician and witch Ayesha Tan-Jones takes the form of a future archeologist, using this vessel to explore a dystopian future. Tan-Jones seeks to de-gender the Chinese creation myth of Pangu, whose body turns into the earth, and imagines a de-colonised future where although the world as we know it is destroyed, so are the boundaries and borders of human-made concepts.
Ayesha Tan-Jones (b.1993, London, UK) explores energy, form and identity of the ‘Femxle Spiritual’, placing this archetypical figure at the centre of a radiant and humming cosmic world view. Pop music, sculpture, digital image and video mix collage manipulation are combined to express a political consciousness traversing the universe on a quest for adventure. In June 2016, Tan-Jones was awarded the Yorkshire Sculpture Park’s graduate residency, giving them space and materials to research and make work on the grounds. This culminated with a show in March 2017. Their installation ‘Psychic Excavations: Parasites of Pangu’, was commissioned by Res, as part of ‘Alembic II Chrominance’, a duo show with Maggie Roberts at Res. in 2018. www.ayeshatanjones.com
