An evening to come together, reflect, tell stories and share ideas around the erotic.
In response to our current exhibition, Zoe Williams: Sunday Fantasy, artist Jodie Chinn brings her ritualistic ‘Covven’ discussion to Mimosa House. The structure of the Covven aims to create a non-hierarchical, communal exploration of ideas and social issues using both conversation and creativity, inspired by ideas and practices found in Wicca, shamanism and the Riot Grrrl Movement.
The design of this gathering emerges out of Chinn’s previous investigations into integrating undervalued forms of knowledge and communication, for instance those seen as ‘feminine’, into the UK’s parliamentary system. This gave rise to her ongoing work, ‘House of Covvens’, and the creation of an imagined political system inspired by the Riot Grrl movement and Wiccan practices; a system which sees politics as ‘societal healing’ and politicians as ‘vessels of the public’: where creativity and community are essential to politics, aiming to empower an individual’s voice beyond ‘the vote’. The Covven is how people would gather together to discuss issues and support one another in this imagined society. Think of it as an alternative House of Parliament, a shared conversation where no one is shouted down.

Jodie Chinn is an interdisciplinary artist. At the core of Jodie’s work is the desire to reach the purest form of connection with her environment, people and self as a form of physical, mental, spiritual and societal healing. Jodie’s work is typically collaborative, interactive and experiential: driven by a desire to challenge and find alternatives to the patriarchal late-capitalist system and the isolation, competition and division it promotes.
