Exploring translation, belonging and affective communication, Matilde Cerruti Quara, Livia Franchini, and Agnė Jokšė are invited to respond to Tomaso Binga’s work with texts and performances.

Tomaso Binga’s first solo exhibition in the UK is currently on view at Mimosa House until 20 December 2019. ‘Tomaso Binga’ is the artistic pseudonym of Bianca Pucciarelli Menna (b. 1931, Salerno, Italy), which was adopted by the artist in the early 1970s. Working with poetry, writing, performance, collage and painting, Binga dissects and challenges the gendered nature of language – exposing patriarchy encrypted within its very structure. The paradoxical act of appropriating a masculine name allowed the artist to parody male prerogatives in society, emphasising women’s lack of agency and voice within the arts and politics.
Matilde Cerruti Quara (b. 1991 in Friuli, IT. Lives and works in London, UK) is a multimedia artist working with writing, installation and performance. Her work explores identity, spirituality, language and power dynamics against the malleable grids of reality and fiction. Through immersive environments that operate as sets and so far have included paintings, sculptural and sound interventions, she reinterprets the aesthetic, architectural and ritualistic aspects belonging to diverse microcosmos and systems of belief. Within them, Cerruti Quara often poses herself as host.
Livia Franchini is a writer from Tuscany, Italy. She has translated Michael Donaghy, Sam Riviere and James Tiptree Jr. among many others and is the author of a poetry pamphlet, Our Available Magic (Makina Books, 2019) and a novel, Shelf Life (Doubleday, 2020).
Agnė Jokšė (b. 1993) is currently based in Copenhagen, studying for a Master’s degree at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Media Arts. In 2017, Jokšė graduated from Vilnius Academy of Arts, Department of Monumental Painting and Stage Design. She has been given the I-Portunus Mobility Support grant for the development and presentation of “Dear friend,” at the 2019 JCDecaux Award exhibition currently on view at CAC in Vilnius.
